Job Title: Floor Manager (Veterinary Technician Training & Development)
Reports To: Practice Manager and ER Director
Position Overview:
We are seeking a collaborative, driven, and people-focused Floor Manager to help lead the training, development, and performance of our veterinary support staff team. This leadership role is instrumental in creating a structured, supportive, and high-performing clinical environment.
Working closely with the Practice Manager, ER Director, Specialty Doctors, fellow Floor Manager, and CEO, this individual will help design and implement a comprehensive Support Staff Development Program—including skill assessments, structured training pathways, and objective performance review systems. In partnership with hospital leaders across departments, this role also plays a key part in fostering a positive, respectful, and cohesive workplace culture.
Once established, the primary day-to-day focus of this role will be hands-on training, coaching, and leading technicians and support staff on the floor.
Key Responsibilities:
Program Development & Strategy
- Collaborate with leadership (Practice Manager, ER Director, CEO, Specialty Doctors, and co-Floor Manager) to develop and implement:
- Initial support staff skill assessments (to include self assessment)
- A comprehensive training program with defined timelines and skill progression
- Clear advancement pathways for support staff growth and development
- Objective, consistent criteria for internal performance evaluations (to include self assessment as well as doctor/mentor/peer assessment)
- Continuously evaluate and refine training systems to ensure effectiveness, efficiency, and alignment with hospital goals
Training & Implementation
- Lead the day-to-day execution of the Support Staff Development Program
- Provide hands-on instruction, mentorship, and real-time coaching on the floor
- Ensure all team members are progressing through training milestones appropriately
- Conduct and document regular skill assessments and performance evaluations with Practice Manager
- Identify skill gaps and proactively create individualized development plans
- Coordinate with the specialty doctors training and advancement opportunities for the specialty support staff
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead by example with professionalism, accountability, and a strong work ethic
- Foster a positive, supportive, and team-oriented culture
- Build strong, respectful relationships with technicians and support staff
- Provide clear, constructive, and timely feedback to team members
- Support team morale, engagement, and retention through consistent presence and communication
- Serve as a floor lead to set and manage the floor, optimize floor efficiency, direct support staff to best support doctors and create effective floor flow
Culture & Cross-Department Collaboration
- Work in tandem with the CSR Manager, Inventory Manager, Lab Manager, and Community & Culture Manager to create and maintain a positive, healthy work environment
- Promote alignment and collaboration across all departments to support a cohesive hospital culture
- Lead by example in professionalism, respect, and accountability in all interactions
- Proactively address and help quell gossip or unproductive behaviors, reinforcing a culture of trust and transparency
- Encourage and model healthy, respectful, and solution-oriented communication among staff
- Support and facilitate effective problem-solving and conflict management, stepping in when needed to guide productive and respectful outcomes
- Partner with leadership to identify cultural challenges and implement solutions that strengthen team dynamics and overall engagement
Collaboration & Communication
- Actively participate and engage in a Leadership Development Cohort (a middle-management mentorship program led by the Practice Manager- to include elements of leadership knowledge and skills, hospital planning, reading requirements, training exercises and continuing education)
- Partner closely with hospital leadership to ensure alignment across departments
- Maintain open, proactive communication regarding team progress, challenges, and opportunities
- Work collaboratively with the co-Floor Manager to ensure consistency in training and expectations
- Serve as a bridge between leadership and clinical staff
Additional Management Duties
- Participate in the interview process of hiring new staff members
- Participate in all support staff disciplinary discussions
- Create and maintain support staff schedule
- Manage on-call phone (in rotation)
Scheduling Requirements
- Floor Manager 1: Sunday-Wednesday (10 hour shifts)
- Floor Manager 2: Wednesday- Saturday (10 hour shifts)
- Timing of shifts is variable depending on the training needs and timing of staff
- Regular wednesdays that overlap with management meetings provide a schedule conducive of collaboration with executive team and are essential
- There may be additional meetings outside of these times for Leadership Development Cohort
- Schedule relief for open shifts or fill in for open shifts as needed
Qualifications:
- Strong clinical experience as a veterinary technician (ER and/or specialty experience required)
- Preferred leadership or mentorship experience in a clinical setting
- Passion for teaching, coaching, and developing others
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Highly organized with the ability to create structure and follow through on execution
- Positive, team-oriented mindset with a collaborative approach to leadership
- Ability to give and receive feedback with professionalism and clarity
