surgery, internal medicine, cardiology, and radiology.

Do I need a referral from my primary veterinarian to see a specialist?

Yes, in most cases, you will be referred by your primary veterinarian. However, if you would like a second opinion, you can always call and schedule an appointment with one of our specialists. If your pet is hospitalized for an emergency and their care warrants a specialist, their case will be taken over by the specialty department the following morning during the weekdays.

How do I schedule an appointment with a specialist?

Two ways – 1) Call our hospital (719) 920-4430 and set up the appointment directly with us. We will contact your primary veterinarian for records prior to your appointment. Or 2) Your primary veterinarian can fill out the referral form (available on our “for veterinarians” page on the website) and send over records, and we will contact you to set up the appointment. If you do not hear from us, please follow up with a call.

What should I bring to my pet's appointment with a specialist?

Your pet's medical history, current medications, and any specific instructions from your primary veterinarian. You can also fill out the specialty initial consult form (available on our “for pet owners” page on the website) prior to your appointment to save time!

What can I expect during my pet's consultation with a specialist?

A thorough examination, review of medical history, discussion of diagnostic and treatment options, and a plan moving forward. Every pet is evaluated on a case-by-case basis, and extensive time is taken to ensure that your pet's needs are heard and addressed.

Can you provide an estimate for specialty services?

An estimate will be provided after the initial consultation and assessment of your pet's needs. If you cancel less than 24 hours before your approintment, or you no show your appointment, this charge will not be refunded.

How long will my pet need to stay at the hospital for a specialty procedure?

This varies depending on the procedure and your pet's recovery. The specialist will provide a more accurate timeline when they discuss the procedure with you. Do you offer telemedicine or virtual consultations?

We do not. In order to provide the highest level of care, our nurses and doctors need to perform an in-person physical examination and assessment of your pet. Once a diagnosis and care has been established, questions regarding small changes can often be done via email or phone call, but follow-up visits may still be needed/recommended to ensure treatment is going smoothly!
