Your Pet Can Be a Hero

Did you know your furry family member could be a superhero? Just like humans, pets sometimes need blood transfusions to survive critical medical emergencies or complex surgeries. At North Springs Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center, we are incredibly proud to have a vital Canine and Feline Blood Donor Program, allowing your healthy pet to make a life-saving impact on another animal in need.

Becoming a blood donor isn’t just about giving—it’s about joining a community dedicated to improving the lives of others. And as a thank you for your pet’s generosity, we offer special perks for our amazing donors!

Why Is Pet Blood Donation So Important?

The need for pet blood is often unpredictable. Transfusions can be life-saving for a variety of conditions, including:

  • Trauma: Pets injured in accidents (e.g., hit by a car) often suffer severe blood loss.

  • Anemia: Caused by chronic illness, parasites, or immune-related conditions.

  • Surgical Complications: Major surgeries may lead to significant blood loss.

  • Poisoning: Some toxins destroy red blood cells or impair blood clotting.

  • Bleeding Disorders: Inherited or acquired conditions affecting clotting ability.

By participating in our Blood Donor Program, your pet becomes a direct part of emergency medical care for animals in our community.

Benefits for Your Donating Pet (and You!)

Beyond saving lives, becoming a donor comes with meaningful benefits:

  • Free Health Screening
Before joining, your pet will receive a comprehensive physical exam and lab blood work—completely free. You’ll gain valuable insight into their overall health.

  • Expert Veterinary Care
Your pet will be handled with compassion and professionalism by our experienced veterinary team.

  • Making a Difference
There’s nothing quite like knowing your pet helped save another life. It’s a truly rewarding experience.

  • Donation Perk
As a thank you, donors receive a $75 credit at North Springs VRC (good toward future services or products) OR a bag of pet food of your choice.

Is My Pet a Candidate?

We follow strict health guidelines to protect both donors and recipients. Your pet must meet the following criteria:

For Canine Donors:

  • Age: Between 2 and 8 years old

  • Weight: Over 50 lbs

  • Preventatives: Current on heartworm, flea, and tick prevention

  • Vaccinations: Up to date on core vaccines (DA2PPv, Rabies)

  • Health: Free of underlying medical conditions

For Feline Donors:

  • Age: Between 2 and 8 years old

  • Weight: Over 10 lbs

  • Lifestyle: Indoor only (to reduce exposure to disease)

  • Vaccinations: Up to date on FVRCP and Rabies

  • Health: No underlying medical issues

What to Expect During a Donation

The donation process is designed to be gentle and low-stress. Here’s what happens on the day of donation:

  • Pre-Donation Mini Screening
A quick physical exam and blood count confirm eligibility.

  • Medications (If Needed)
If your pet is nervous, mild sedation or relaxing medication may be given.

  • Preparation
A small area on the neck will be shaved and cleaned.

  • Blood Collection
The donation typically takes 5–15 minutes while your pet relaxes comfortably with gentle handling and reassurance.

  • Post-Donation Care
Afterward, your pet will enjoy treats and praise and be monitored briefly before heading home with a hero tag!

  • Hero Postcard
Your address will be included on a postcard attached to your pet’s donation. When the blood is used, the recipient’s family may choose to send you a thank-you message, letting you know the life your pet helped save.
